Damascening is the artisan art of inlaying gold and silver onto a steel or iron matrix —typically, forming patterns and figures that resembles the rich tapestry patterns of damask silk. Despite the name, this technique of unknown origin was already practised in Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and in the far East - China and Japan. Damascening is a very time-consuming inlaying technique where the iron matrix is carved with patterns in order to hold the gold pieces and threads hammered by hand.
