About Moroccan Intarsia inlaying technique:

The Moroccan intarsia technique inlays patterns of different colored sections of wood, ivory or mother of pearl onto the solid wood matrix. By contrast, marquetry assembles lined designs out of thin veneers. This makes intarsia more costly in time and materials but allows for a more eye-catching and geometrically complex design.

The origin of this technique dates back to the VIIth century when Egypt came under Arab rule.
