About Intarsia inlaying technique:
The intarsia technique inlays patterns of different colored sections of wood, ivory or mother of pearl onto the solid wood matrix. By contrast, marquetry assembles lined designs out of thin veneers. This makes intarsia more costly in time and materials but allows for a more eye-catching and geometrically complex design.
The origin of this technique dates back to the VIIth century when Egypt came under Arab rule. Indigenous arts of intarsia with non-representational decors and tiling patterns spread throughout the Maghreb. The technique was introduced into Europe through Andalusia and Sicily when it was already perfected in Islamic North Africa.
