The job was offered to those who had finished school and had completed their training in the administration. The scribe student would go through an exam after which he was granted a reed and a palette. At this point, the scribe was qualified to join the administration of the Kingdom. A scribes could come from any of the social classes. His career required a wide range of skills, and personal abilities would help him climb the ladder of the public office, right up to a position close to the very same Pharaoh.
The scribes would sit cross-legged in order to write with reed on one hand and the palette on the other hand. Scribes were widely depicted together with the Egyptian god of intelligence, Thot, the patron of science and arts.
