The Cave Canem Mosaic is one of our wide collection of Animal Mosaics. This reproduction was found in Pompeii in 'The House of the Tragic Poet' and illustrates a black dog surrounded by the latin quote: "Cave canem!" in English "Beware the dog!". These words, much like similar signs today, warned visitors to enter at their own risk and served as protection over the more private quarters of the home.
This masterpiece is an entirely handmade mosaic reproduction created using the techniques of ancient romans called "Opus tessellatum", cubic stones tiles mosaic. During its manufacture 8 mm stone and natural marble tiles are used, all together being fixed on mortar with a metallic structure.
Can be installed on wall or floor.
